Children Catch Hypocrisy. Quickly.

23 April 2025 · By Shalini Kamboj

(And sometimes with a dramatic eye-roll.)

We say, “Don’t spend too much time on screens”— while replying to WhatsApp at the dinner table.

We ask, “Why are you always distracted?”— while half-listening ourselves.

The truth is, children may not always do what we say. But they almost always absorb what we consistently do.

They notice:

How we treat others when we’re tired.

Whether we pause or react.

If we respect screen-time limits—or quietly break them.

How we handle stress, failure, and joy.

They’re not looking for our perfect words. They’re learning from our daily behaviour.

So if we want more calm, more presence, more balance— we have to show it first.

They don’t need lectures. They need to see us living the values we talk about.

That’s conscious parenting. Not control. Not perfection. Just consistency—with a dash of honesty.
