Finding Joy in Simplicity: My Shift from Festival Stress to Celebration
8 November 2023 · By Shalini Kamboj
A few years back, I found myself engulfed in the festive rush. When I spoke to friends I heard similar sentiments – that sense of being overwhelmed.
It was almost like it was festival neutral. Christmas, Diwali, Navratri, Karwa Chauth, Id... each brought its share of stress and anxiety, depending on who you are, and the festival you celebrated. And, this mainly impacted women. The relentless pursuit of perfection in preparations, the gourmet food, the 'wow'-worthy gifts. Yes, we enjoyed ourselves, but beneath the laughter, there lingered a hollowness. I wonder if we all got pressurized by media images created by advertising that encouraged consumerism and sho sha , that led us collectively into creating picture perfect Diwali.
Then one Diwali, a family loss brought all festivities at home to a halt. With nothing to do, I observed. I watched others' decorations, the vibrant rangoli, the soft glow of diyas... and felt a profound joy. It dawned on me that in the race for having the best festivities, we often overlook the essence of these occasions: togetherness, love, gratitude, and sharing.
That year, I learned a valuable lesson. I let go of the complexities, the need to do the best, and embraced the spirit of community. Since then, my festival anxiety has faded into a serene anticipation. I share this story in hopes that it resonates with some of you who feel the holiday pressure. Let's take a step back this festive season and find joy in the simple things, for often, that's where true happiness lies.
