Let's Not Be Time Travelers

During a recent learning experience at the CEP (Conscious Entrepreneurship), I encountered a concept that crystalized something that I thought I should capture: "We cannot manage time; we can only manage ourselves."
We often invest in courses, books, and strategies on time management, yet time itself is an unchangeable constant. The real challenge lies in managing our thoughts, emotions, and how we engage with the present moment.
Time often seems to slip through our fingers because we struggle to stay in the now. We become inadvertent "time travelers," oscillating between the past, reliving regrets, blame, or judgments, which tether us emotionally and distract us from the present; and the future, worrying, anticipating, or overly fixating on what's to come, robbing us of the clarity and focus we need for the moment at hand.
While countless meditative practices and philosophies emphasize "being present," the essence lies in managing ourselves, our emotions and thoughts.
Here's a key insight to doing this: thoughts and emotions are deeply intertwined. We often ruminate, thinking we're processing a problem, but underlying that mental churn is an unresolved emotion.
Our rational mind starts to work most effectively only when devoid of emotional hijacks.
The solution? Address the emotion. When we resolve emotional turbulence, our thoughts naturally settle, and clarity emerges.
For me, practices like my daily sadhana (meditation) and practices that I can use through the day, have been invaluable in increasing self-awareness and being able to focus within. It provides the framework to recognize and deal with emotions, enabling me to focus on what truly matters: the present.
Time is one of the most precious resources we have. By managing ourselves, we can harness its potential more effectively. So, let's commit to not being time travelers. Let's live fully in the now.
What are your thoughts on this? Have you noticed when in the midst of a conversation you are time-traveling? Are you able to trace the thought and the underlying emotions and deal with them? Would love to hear how you approach self-management and staying present.
